‘There wants a good plan!’ – a weekend of lectures, guided tours and a conference dinner, for members and guests of The Gardens Trust, at Robinson College, Grange Road, Cambridge CB3 9AN.

Welcome to Cambridge – our ‘good plan’ offers:

 Tours, lectures and exhibitions on Brown’s life and works, both executed and ‘planned’
 Visit to Brown’s Manor at Fenstanton and his enigmatic memorial in the parish church
 Guided tours of his major landscapes at Wimpole Hall and Madingley Hall
 Optional visit to the renowned Cambridge University Botanic Gardens
 Guided walk along ‘The Backs’ to view what he did, and did not, implement

CGT Christmas Lecture: ‘Capability Brown At Home’

Please note that this year, the Christmas Lecture is on a Thursday, instead of the usual Friday.

‘Capability Brown At Home: busy running his family, a Royal Garden and his nation-wide business’

Dr David Jacques was the first Inspector of Historic Parks and Gardens at English Heritage, partly on the strength of his Georgian Gardens: The Reign of Nature (1983). He then edited The Gardens of William and Mary (1989) and afterwards led the landscape team that restored the Privy Garden at Hampton Court. This year he was curatorial advisor to an exhibition of John Spyers’s watercolours of Hampton Court, sold to Catherine the Great of Russia, and helped organise and spoke at the conference on ‘Capability Brown and his Associates’. For ICOMOS he initiated, selected papers and helped organise the international conference at Bath on Brown’s influence. He is a trustee of the Chiswick House and Gardens Trust.
